Consistency Is The Magic Bean

In life the only way to see consistent results is to remain consistent. If you want to become “better” at something you need to maintain consistent practice. Learn to play a musical instrument, throw a curve ball, utilize a new language, in order to become “better” requires practice. Your overall health and well-being are no different in this matter. The positive news is that we were born to be healthy and function optimally during our course of life even though stress occurs and takes a toll on the body. This stress negatively impacts our health and ability to function in the state that we want. In order to maintain or change your outlook in health takes…practice.

Instead of waiting for sickness or disease to strike you like our current model of health employs, why not be consistently practicing good health? “We need to change our disease care system into a health care system” – Dr. Frank Lipman.

Chiropractic care employs a model of health and vitality. The Chiropractors responsibility is to get the sick well and to keep the well…well! Chiropractors are trained to access and detect subluxations (misalignment’s in the spinal column) that place undo stress upon a single nerve fiber thus creating a medley of health problems. The reason for this is that your central nerve system is the master control system, without it fully functioning and in an ideal state of harmony, the body cannot fully function.

Contrary to popular belief there is no such thing as a “magic” Chiropractic adjustment. Yep, that’s right. Being healthy is no different than anything else in life. It requires consistency to achieve and maintain a healthy central nerve system. When should you start to take care of your spine? Right away! Once again taking care of your spine is no different than anything else in life. Do we wait to introduce vegetables and fruit to our children until they 40 years old? Do we tell our children to stay inside and sit down all the time and not enjoy physical activity? Taking care of the central nerve system to ensure proper health and vitality begins right away! It’s about being consistent with every other facet in life.

Hope Hope Hooray!

There is a sense of overwhelming peace when you know that there is hope in any given situation. This simple four-letter word provides security for not only the future, but also for time and space where one currently resides. Commonly seen today in the medical model approach, hope seems to be the first thing that is stripped away. Labels of weakness, dis-ease, and fear understandingly drive any mind to a place where optimism simply cannot exist.

We are here to tell you that there is hope! The body is not weak nor is it destined for sickness. All of us have an intelligent, self-governing and self-regulating system that controls every function of the body and its healing capabilities. In fact, this innate intelligence that is in you today, has been with you since one cell became two in your mothers womb – Pretty neat. However this internal homeostatic-system can become reduced when bombarded with external factors. Similar to poor cell reception, when stress, i.e. physical, chemical, or emotional stress is placed on the body, necessary nerve communication becomes less than optimal, insert dis-ease here.

A chiropractors primary responsibility is to locate this undo stress placed on the Central Nerve System via vertebral subluxations. When this subluxation is corrected and optimal communication of our Central Nerve System is restored, healing will naturally occur. Healing is an inborn potential that simply needs to be unleashed. Bj Palmer said it best, “While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body; Chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment.” We know that the body needs no help once we remove nerve interference, and this is the role of the chiropractor. Outside of altering normal physiology (drugs) and altering normal biomechanics (surgery) what if there was a different way? Because the Central Nerve System controls every tissue, organ, glad, and cell in our body, healing can still exist when optimal communication between brain and body is restored. This is why it is crucial to get checked.

Healthy Central Nerve System = Healthy Immune System

By | Benefits of Chiropractic | No Comments

The master control system (central nerve system, CNS) directly coordinates and controls every other system in the human body. Second to the CNS in importance of keeping our bodies in optimal health is the immune system. The immune system is our body’s natural defense against foreign invaders such as toxins, pollutants, bacteria, germs and other external stressors. Your body is constantly on guard to defend against such stressors and needs to be in an ideal state for the immune system to function properly.

The main way the CNS and the immune system communicate is via chemical messengers which are released by nerve cells. The CNS affects the immune system both directly and indirectly. The direct effect is via communication of nerve cells with white blood cells; while the indirect effect is through blood-borne neurotransmitters and hormones.

What inhibits your immune system response to effectively defend against stressors? Improper dysfunction within the CNS will create internal interference between every system that the CNS coordinates. Subluxation (misalignment within the spinal column) will create undo stress upon a single nerve fiber creating internal chaos and improper coordination. When a subluxation exists the first system in your body that becomes weakened will be the immune system and your immune responses.

A subluxation impedes the CNS’s ability to properly coordinate and effectively control all other systems in the human body. A subluxaion is stress on your immune system. This in turn will deplete the immune system’s ability to properly adapt and heal due to the chronic inflammation placed upon the body via a subluxation. With chronic inflammation the immune system adversely is weakened and not properly able to coordinate neurological and biological communication, which decreases your immune cell production and leads to chronic sickness.

The foundation of health begins with a properly functioning CNS. It has been demonstrated that balancing and maximizing the coordination of the CNS is key to optimal health and immune system function.

The Birth Of Chiropractic

The Birth Of Chiropractic

September 18, 1895, marked the official birth of chiropractic.  This date is attributed to the founding father, D.D. Palmer, who gave the first recorded adjustment to Harvey Lillard in Davenport, Iowa.  Harvey Lillard had lost most of his hearing at a young age. The adjustment that D.D. Palmer performed on Lillard almost completely restored his hearing back to normal.  In the early days the principles of chiropractic were very simple. They consisted of merely locating bumps along the center of the patient’s back and forcibly reducing them with a shove or a push.  It was not until 1904-1905 that chiropractic was ingrained and seriously taught as a science, art and philosophy of the healing arts.

Back Up Just A Little Bit In Time

The first recorded adjustment was in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa.  However, spinal manipulation existed WAY BEFORE D.D. Palmer was around.  Enter Hippocrates. Hippocrates stressed the importance and teachings of writings we know today as aphorisms.  These aphorisms taught not to interfere or hinder, in any way, nature’s attempt towards recovery.  Hippocrates recognized the importance of spinal manipulation. Hippocrates taught that nature must heal and that the physician can only remove the obstruction (subluxation).  Much of chiropractic’s patient-centered approach can be linked to Hippocratic roots.

Fast forward to Claudius Galen, 130 – 200 A.D. He was considered the first to teach the proper positions and relations of the vertebrae.  Galen, like Hippocrates, recognized the importance of the nerve system. He stressed the importance to his students that the nerve system was the key to maximum health. Around the same time of Galen, Chang-Chung-King, referred to by medical science as the “Chinese Hippocrates”, stressed the importance of observing the patient as opposed to treating the symptom as for each disease.  The list of healers, philosophies and education goes on and on. Looking to spine is not a “new” trend. The primary focus of chiropractic is simply to remove the things that interfere with the body’s natural normal healing ability. #getchecked

Can I Get The One Time Adjustment…

Can I Get The One Time Adjustment??

The big question that is often thought of or presumed with what actually happens in chiropractic offices is…”Can I get the one-time adjustment?”  Unfortunately some chiropractic offices create the illusion that you will only need ONE adjustment to solve all of your problems.  Which just so happens to be the farthest thing from the truth.  Let’s have some fun with this thought process as well as debunking why it just isn’t so.

Why Can’t I Get the “One and Done”?

The reason you cannot get the one and done is because it does not exist.  Why do I have pain and then get adjusted and feel better?  When a subluxation is adjusted the body automatically creates a chemical reaction releasing feel good hormones as well as a surge of ATP and dopamine.  ATP is your energy currency that every cell requires, thus allowing you to take on the day.  Dopamine rushes to your brain and releases a flood of feel good endorphins.  It does not mean that you are better though.  It means that you just started on the path to healing.

Doesn’t the Bone Move?

Yes and no.  Your chiropractor’s responsibility is to adjust the subluxation which is creating dysfunction within your central nerve system.  Adjusting the subluxation takes time and repetition to restore proper alignment within the spine. The bone does not just move from point A to point B in a matter of a milliseconds and skip all the healing properties that are required to establish proper neural memory.  THAT is drastic thinking and does not happen.  The bone moves over time to establish proper alignment.  Think of braces along the teeth. Same concept.

Awesome Analogies

Time and repetition are fundamental to maintaining your central nerve system’s functionality and peak performance.  Healthy central nerve system = healthy body.  You use it every day so maintain its integrity and limit the dysfunction that it comes in contact with.  Here are some analogies that relate to the “one and done” adjustment.

  1.  Hairstylist- Can I have the one time hair-cut so I don’t have to ever get it cut again…please?
  2. Mechanic- Can I just get my oil changed just once…please?
  3. Fitness Trainer- Can I just work-out once and have amazing six-pack abs…please?
  4. Parenting- I am just going to parent one day and teach my kids one time…hope it works!
  5. Nutrition- Can I just eat all the healthy foods just for one day and call it quits…pretty please??
  6. Religion- I read my Bible only on August 1st 2010 and learned everything I needed to!
  7. Book-keeping- Can you please just balance my books once so I don’t ever have to do it again?
  8. Doctor- So I want the labs to check for everything… please!

You Have No Role In Your OWN Healing…Lie

You Have No Role In Your OWN Healing…False!

The statement that we have been told in our society is that “you have no role in your own healing,” and we need to ‘trust’ the system.  What a big, fat LIE.  The more you actually believe this, the sicker we become.  Contrary to popular belief, you have every chance and opportunity to enable your body to heal.  You just need to listen to it.  You need to be taught the RIGHT way.  As a doctor of Chiropractic, I embrace the role of doctor.  Doctor means teacher.  Let’s continue.

Healing Starts from The Inside

The capacity for cells to heal starts from the inside with the Central Nerve System.  The CNS makes and coordinates every cell in your body, and cannot afford to take days off.  So, why do some heal faster than others?  If your CNS is intact and properly coordinating messages to every part of your body, your body will adapt and overcome.  Guess what?  You do not have to take any pill, supplement, or get zapped by a laser beam for this to happen.

Limiting Healing Starts from the Inside As Well

If dysfunction is present within your CNS, it’s called a subluxation.  A subluxation breaks down the communication line between your brain and body.  When the brain is unaware of what to properly heal…it doesn’t.  A subluxation will disable your body from adapting and healing properly because it is creating chaos from the inside.  This is why taking care of your spinal hygiene is crucial.

It All Comes Down To Hard Work

To be honest, to be healthy is hard work.  If you take care of your spine, it will take care of you and anything else you throw at your body.  Be wary of “new” things that people will try to sell you that are bright and shiny and get you out of the hard work.  Healing and adapting is 100% innately given.  Trust it well.

Adjustment Vs. Manipulation… Choose Wisely

Adjustment vs. Manipulation… Choose Wisely

Chiropractic adjustment vs. manipulation. What’s the difference? The difference is in everything that the Chiropractor does. Understanding spinal imaging and neurological testing is to comprehend what to adjust and what not to adjust. Something that is “moved wrongly” is considered a manipulation of the spine.  The difference between these words is based on the understanding and science of what they actually mean in the Chiropractic world.

What Is an Adjustment?

A Chiropractic adjustment is a specific force applied to the spine by the Chiropractor’s hands to facilitate the body in realigning a subluxation towards its proper position.  Proper alignment restores optimal nerve supply to the damaged tissues and cells of the body.  By removing neurological interference, the body can initiate healing without external intervention.

What Is a Manipulation?

Manipulation – “The action of manipulating someone in a CLEVER or unscrupulous way.”

A manipulation is a guess.  Some type of nonspecific, general, posterior to anterior spinal manipulation with no thought as to the location or direction of the spinal subluxation.   It’s an experiment on one’s spinal structure that is based off of subjective analysis.  Without objective analysis, over-diagnosing and improper care will continue.

Adjustment, Please!

Sure, people “feel” good after a manipulation because your body can be in a state of shock.  Imagine you have a sprained ankle and someone rips and pulls on it.  Immediately afterwards, your body goes into a state of protection and hormones surge all over the body.  An adjustment is not designed to make you instantly “feel” good, it is designed to make you instantly begin healing and adapt to create a normal physiological response in the body.  The Palmer School of Chiropractic introduced the use of x-ray in chiropractic practice in 1910.  The objective for doing so was to “verify or deny palpation findings and to verify or deny proof of the existence of vertebral subluxations.”

We don’t guess when it comes to your health, and neither should you!  Avoid being manipulated; get checked, and get the right adjustment for YOU.

Banish Seasonal Allergies Naturally

Banish Seasonal Allergies Naturally

Fall in love with taking care of yourself. Focus on creating a lifestyle that supports your mind, body and your spirit. Don’t rely or turn to medicine and its probability.  Seasonal allergies do not have to hold you back from the world you want to experience. This is not a gimmick, fad or a sale.  Seasonal allergies become apparent when your body is failing to heal and adapt to the stress placed on it.

Why Do Seasonal Allergies Occur?

There are two obvious reasons.  First, we begin to spend more time outside and begin to acclimate to the changes that are occurring.  Secondly, your body is responding to the allergens that have technically always been here.  When the irritant/allergen is inhaled, eaten or touched, the body produces specific antibodies called immunoglobulin, which triggers the release of histamines. Once released, histamines begin ravaging the body. Blood pressure drops, nearby blood vessels dilate, and the spaces between surrounding cells fill with fluid.  This inflammatory response launches a cascade of miserable symptoms, from itching and sneezing to nausea and vomiting.

The Chemical Cascade of Histamines

If two people are standing right next to each other, breathing the same air, why would Person A start producing mucus buildup and sneezing while Person B is completely fine?  What is the difference?  It’s the same air quality for both.  There are MANY factors that are the same and MANY that are different.  Ultimately, it depends on person A’s central nerve system (CNS) and how it responds and processes the air.  Person A will begin to produce more histamines, but then will typically go to Walgreen’s and buy Anti-Histamines.  Person A fails to realize that their body is still making histamines and their “cure” is a cover-up for a couple hours.  They never truly address the cause.

Chiropractic “Heals” The Body

Chiropractors are nerve system specialists.  We focus on subluxations (misalignment’s in the spine) that irritate the CNS and cause damage to your tissues cells.  Cells of the immune system and inflammatory cells receive orders and communicate in their response via the CNS.  Stress can be defined as “a state of disharmony or threatened homeostasis provoked by psychological, environmental, and physiological stressors.”  By removing subluxations, your body is able to adapt and heal from the so called “seasonal allergies”.  Why deal with symptoms when you can go straight to the cause with chiropractic!
