Investing in your health is a path that often goes untraveled.  Much like the famous poet Robert Frost in his telling of The Road Less Traveled, we often take the road of the least resistance.  We conform to societies beliefs that your health is something that can be bought.  That health comes in the form of a pill, lotion, or potion conjured to make money off of the sick.  Contrary to popular belief, we were designed to be healthy.  Health is innately given to us and we have to invest in it.  The road less traveled is often in the form of natural healing, letting the body heal itself.  Chiropractors approximately only serve 10% of the population.  Most people think Chiropractors are CRAZY to educate the masses that the most important system that controls, regulates, and services every human function in your body needs periodic check-ups to ensure optimal function.  Most people thought Steven Jobs was CRAZY when he introduced the IPhone without any buttons (the social norm was Blackberries)!   

Investing in your health comes with education.  The role of the Chiropractor is not to simply adjust patients but to “check” patients as well with a systematic scientific technique that looks for imbalances along the spine creating dis-ease not only within the central nerve system but within the body.  Without a healthy central nerve system health does not exist.  Proper education is in place to empower patients.  Much of what Chiropractic stands for is validated scientifically in every human anatomy textbook, yet society will always attempt to perpetuate those methods which better serve mankind.   In this office we have a conviction stronger than a desire not just to please, but to serve the masses with specific and scientifically based natural healing.   

Big business influences the health care policy.  Big business is not interested in the road less traveled.  You don’t see Chiropractic advertisements on television with “Chiropractic Hospitals” you only see medical advertisements.  Realize the central nerve system is the only system in the body protected by bone.  The brain has the skull and the spinal cord has the spinal bones.  It must be pretty important if we were designed that way!  Investing in your health begins with taking care of the inside first, the central nerve system.  A subluxation (misalignment within the spinal column) is not a complete cycle for the body.  Your body’s innate intelligence is designed to keep you functioning.  Chiropractors work with innate intelligence to assist the body in achieving better function and to get it working at optimal potential.

It’s that time of year again when the fool’s and jester’s come out to play. April 1st is upon us and we need to be cautious of the tricks and misdirection to come. Like the biggest prankster in the 5th grade, your body can also play jokes on you. We are talking about symptoms (or lack of symptoms) which can be understandingly misleading.  

It is crucial to get checked by a Chiropractor, and not only on April 1st. Chiropractors do not get fooled by these symptoms but seek the underlying CAUSE for why they are occurring in the first place. Symptoms are simply how the body is expressing a hidden issue at hand. While symptoms are an important piece, we are confident that through our thorough and unmatched Gonstead analysis, we will correct the CAUSE. Above, we stated that a ‘lack of symptoms’ can also be misleading, we see this all of the time. The nerve system controls 100% of all bodily functions. This includes organs, glands, tissue cells, everything! You are a master of 10% of these nerves. This specific 10% carries sensory information from the body to the brain (pain, touch, aches, etc.). The other 90% is in control of movement and bodily functions, which cannot be felt. Often, dysfunctions of these systems can be apparent even if you are unable to ‘feel’ it. Sickness, dis-ease, or those sneaky symptoms are a result of the body’s inability to communicate efficiently between brain and body via the nerve system. Balance your stress by balancing your health. Your health begins and ends within the spinal column, the central nerve system.  Recent research has demonstrated decreased adaptability of the nerve system in those who suffer from depression – Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2019. To understand the importance of the central nervous system is to understand this phrase. “You live your life through your central nerve system, every human experience you have is coordinated, processed, and controlled via your nerve system.”

 Your stress creates fight or flight. What kind of stress are we talking about? Bills, driving to work, politics, religion, depression, public speaking…etc…etc.  Break it down this way.  Have you ever felt stressed before?  Everyone should say yes. When you feel stress you typically “feel” it along the spinal pathway and the feeling comes from what the nerve controls, that being muscles, tissues, ligaments, and soft tissue. When your body has a stressful thought that continues for even a short period of time the fight or flight response is activated and the small, yet drastically important, muscles along the spinal column are basically put to sleep. This is due to the fact that specific muscle groups that are larger are required for instances of fight or flight. 

When fight or flight becomes a chronic nature in your life due to the stress that you place upon it the nerves that are supposed to be controlling the tiny muscles along the spine send insufficient messages and the central nerve system is unable to properly control the body. The subluxation (misalignment in the spine creating pressure on or around a spinal nerve) ensues and creates constant dysfunction within your body.

The Role Of Chiropractic In Your Life

What is the role of Chiropractic in your life?  The primary focus of Chiropractic is to simply remove those things that interfere with the body’s natural ability to heal.  Chiropractic is a science, art and philosophy about the inner workings of the human body.  By understanding how the spine and central nervous system is connected, the scene is set for exploring how dysfunction within the spine can lead to impaired health and well-being.

The key focus of Chiropractic study is to detect and correct vertebral subluxations.  In turn this will restore the healthy function of the spine and nerve system.  Remove the vertebral subluxation in order for your body to better be able to adapt and correctly function.  When a vertebral subluxation exists it will create tension and stress on the spinal nerve due to the strain of the disc in between the vertebrae.  The effects of the displacement protrudes the disc and creates stress on the spinal nerve.  Edema will create pressure on the nerve resulting in one of two things happening, stimulation or inhibition.  As a direct result the cells, tissues, glands, and organs that the nerve supplies will either be stimulated or inhibited.

Tackling Gut Problems From Within The Body

The Gut!  Tackling gut problems from within the body is focused on decreasing internal inflammation that is causing symptoms to appear in people who have “gut problems.”  What kind of gut problems?  IBS, constipation, diverticulitis, reflux, etc etc.  The list goes on and on when it comes to gut problems.  More people become concerned with the symptom that they have and attempt to cover -up the signs they are producing besides addressing the actual concern.  The brain – body connection is dysfunctional.

Remember that the central nervous system coordinates, controls, and makes everything in your entire body.  The CNS does this via a network of cables called nerves.  When a nerve becomes irritated in the spinal column due to instability from a subluxation, the nerve is not in normal ‘tone’.  As a direct result of the nerve being irritated in the spinal column, the organs, cells, tissues, and glands that the nerve coordinates will become dysfunctional as well.  How so?  The spine is a direct extension from the brain.  When a nerve is not in normal ‘tone’ and not sending the proper messages, the body in return will show symptoms from that subluxation. Think of it like a super highway that is under construction.  Who honestly likes construction on a super highway?  No one!

A study from the 2016 Gastroenterology journal suggests that the vagus nerve is extremely precious not only for homeostasis of a variety of organ systems, but also for the regulation of appetite, mood, and inflammation.  Common gut conditions can be greatly influenced by the function of the vagus nerve.  It’s all about the brain – body connection.  Research confirms the importance of a well adjusted spine on the function of the vagus nerve.  Optimal function begins and ends from within the body.  Don’t treat symptoms. Proper Structure = Proper Posture

Special attention must be given when talking and differentiating between structure and posture.  Definition of structure – the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex.  The human body is COMPLEX to say the least.  In Chiropractic we utilize the science that the body is an entire unit.  The patient is an entity and must be dealt with as such.  The primary need is to correct all faults in the entire architecture of the patient.

In Chiropractic we visualize the spinal column via x-ray analysis to understand the health of the most important and complex system within your entire body…the central nerve system.  Your spinal structure is often hindered by vertebral subluxations that create chaos within the most complex system in the body.  Nevertheless, structural corrections must be made to restore normal flow of the CNS.  Imagine the importance of x-ray’s and getting a clear understanding of what to do for the patient, most importantly though, of what not to do.  Primo Non Nocere (First, not to injure).

Proper spinal structure will bring about proper posture.  The definition of posture- the position in which someone holds their body when standing or sitting.  People can have “good” posture and still have a poor spinal structure.  Imagine how much more energy the body would have if the spinal structure was intact within the proper limits.  When subluxations exist within the spinal column, your muscles begin to work harder and faster than they should to maintain the constant fight of gravity.  Your body is always attempting to right itself and make sure the eyes are level to go throughout your day.   Ideally, our bones stack up one upon the other: the head rests directly on top of the spine, which sits directly over the pelvis, which sits directly over the knees and ankles. Posture is on the outside of the body and we know that it’s the inside that counts.  It’s the inside of the body that heals, adapts, and makes corrections.   The body craves alignment. Making good structural corrections will lead to the proper posture.

Basic Physics Of The Spine

Basic physics of the spine begins with the foundation.  To insure durability, every engineer, architect, builder and carpenter knows the importance of a strong foundation.  Any minute change or shift in the foundation will cause deviation in the top part of the structure and, perhaps, ultimately its collapse.  The pelvic girdle is the body’s foundation to maintaining proper communication lines open for the central nerve system (CNS). The CNS, which encompasses the brain and spinal cord, is your body’s lifeline for every function, action and experience you encounter in life.  The vertebrae house and protect the spinal nerves that control organs, cells, tissues and glands.

Open communication

When the pelvic girdle is properly sustained, the CNS has open communication.  Dramatic changes begin to ensue when a subluxation exists in the pelvic girdle; therefore, maximum efficiency and function of the CNS cannot be obtained without a sustainable pelvic girdle.  Subluxations in the spine are easily recognized and will produce symptoms. The first symptoms of subluxated vertebraes will often be internal and range from asthma, allergies, infertility, colic, bed-wetting and the list goes on and on.  However, the pelvis does NOT have nerve endings and subluxations related to the pelvic region can be easily overlooked when one is not familiar with the symptoms.

The Cause

While adjusting and correcting subluxations of the upper part of the spinal column is beneficial, addressing the cause of the problem begins with a full spinal approach to each patient starting from the bottom – up.   For complete and lasting results, the subluxations that are created as a result of a pelvis subluxation need to be properly restored while still balancing and maintaining the integrity of the pelvis. Just think of the chronic forward head posture that we create with our daily lives (cell phones, gadgets, computers).  This puts an immense amount of pressure on the neck and upper back. The pelvic girdle, being your center of gravity, has to maintain function and coordination during extended periods of forward head flexion. The big payoff with good pelvic stability is that we feel healthier, have more energy and move gracefully.
