The Birth Of Chiropractic

The Birth Of Chiropractic

September 18, 1895, marked the official birth of chiropractic.  This date is attributed to the founding father, D.D. Palmer, who gave the first recorded adjustment to Harvey Lillard in Davenport, Iowa.  Harvey Lillard had lost most of his hearing at a young age. The adjustment that D.D. Palmer performed on Lillard almost completely restored his hearing back to normal.  In the early days the principles of chiropractic were very simple. They consisted of merely locating bumps along the center of the patient’s back and forcibly reducing them with a shove or a push.  It was not until 1904-1905 that chiropractic was ingrained and seriously taught as a science, art and philosophy of the healing arts.

Back Up Just A Little Bit In Time

The first recorded adjustment was in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa.  However, spinal manipulation existed WAY BEFORE D.D. Palmer was around.  Enter Hippocrates. Hippocrates stressed the importance and teachings of writings we know today as aphorisms.  These aphorisms taught not to interfere or hinder, in any way, nature’s attempt towards recovery.  Hippocrates recognized the importance of spinal manipulation. Hippocrates taught that nature must heal and that the physician can only remove the obstruction (subluxation).  Much of chiropractic’s patient-centered approach can be linked to Hippocratic roots.

Fast forward to Claudius Galen, 130 – 200 A.D. He was considered the first to teach the proper positions and relations of the vertebrae.  Galen, like Hippocrates, recognized the importance of the nerve system. He stressed the importance to his students that the nerve system was the key to maximum health. Around the same time of Galen, Chang-Chung-King, referred to by medical science as the “Chinese Hippocrates”, stressed the importance of observing the patient as opposed to treating the symptom as for each disease.  The list of healers, philosophies and education goes on and on. Looking to spine is not a “new” trend. The primary focus of chiropractic is simply to remove the things that interfere with the body’s natural normal healing ability. #getchecked

Do You Have Patience To “Get Better”

Do You Have The Patience To “Get Better”?

Do you have the patience to get better?  As Americans we have a ‘fast-food’ mentality.  We want and need things NOW. Anything that takes time has to come with a warning label!  Who would enforce the warning label though? There are entire industries out there hoping that you are looking for the ‘quick fix’ and will feed on your need for speed.    We are becoming a society that expects the ‘quick fix’. However, we will almost always become disappointed with the results. What happened to patience? We must learn the virtue of patience.  With patience comes results…in everything.

Do Not Neglect The Time

Once you go to a chiropractor you will have to keep going for the rest of your life.  Have you heard this before? In a way, it is true. Your chiropractor should explain to you why this is.  Chiropractic care allows the body to heal and adapt to both external and internal stressors without taking medication, invasive shots, surgeries or other forms of western medicine.  Chiropractic care enables your body to accomplish this by focusing on the central nerve system (CNS). With a healthy CNS you will have a healthy body. It’s a fact. It’s proven. It’s science.  It’s the truth and no one can dispute the significance of a healthy CNS. What is required with chiropractic care? Patience and time. The body requires time to heal. For example, Think of how much damage is done to your tissue cells when you break a bone or get a cut on your hand.  Anything that damages the TISSUE CELL requires time to repair and heal. There is a lot to rebuild.

Patience Is Needed, Oh Tissue Cell

The tissue cell requires your patience.    Want to build muscle by lifting weights? Change the tissue cell.  Want to learn to play the guitar? Change the tissue cell. Want to change improper curves in your spine?  Change the tissue cell. We can keep going on and on about other examples, but what all of this points back to is the word patience.  When your CNS is not adapting correctly, the tissue cell learns negative memory. Change the memory with positive repetitive actions, e.g., chiropractic care.  This is why your chiropractor will tell you to come back again. #getchecked

Cough, Sneeze, Fever Much? Learn Why Your Child Is Healthy.

Cough, Sneeze, Fever Much? Learn Why Your Child Is Healthy.

Cough, sneeze, fever much?  Would you say that these are symptoms of someone who is healthy?  Sounds like a trick question doesn’t it. These “common” symptoms are reminders that the body is functioning correctly.  Health is about how the body operates and functions accordingly. Coughing, sneezing and fever has everything to do with a “normal” healthy response in your child… in moderation.  That is the key word here…moderation.

What Does Moderation Have To Do With It?

Moderation has everything to do with everything.  For example, on Monday your child is having symptoms.  Tuesday, your child is still having symptoms. On Wednesday morning your child’s body should be back to almost full capacity.  What if your child exhibits these symptoms for days, weeks or months? Then your child’s body is not exhibiting a normal healthy response and is failing to adapt and heal.  When the body fails to adapt to a stressor then moderation is taken out of the equation.

Eliminating Confusion – Fire For Effect

When the body is failing to adapt, the central nerve system is not performing at its optimum potential.  When the CNS becomes dysfunctional it confuses other systems that it regulates and controls, e.g., the immune system.  It’s a domino effect. One thing leads to another. An unhealthy CNS leads to a confused immune system which in turn leads to a child constantly being sick over and over again.  When an immune system is constantly being bombarded and never gets an opportunity to heal, the cycle just keeps repeating itself. We begin to feel sick all the time and it becomes our new normal.  We start believing that this is just how life is! Not true! Fire for effect and get your child’s CNS checked for dysfunction. With a healthy and properly functioning CNS the immune system is able to combat and adapt a cough, sneeze or fever in an adequate and healthy time frame.

Learning From The Leading Cause Of Death

Learning From The Leading Cause Of Death

The number one leading cause of death in the U.S. is heart disease.  The western lifestyle and diet left unchecked encourages the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD).  In most cases, the first symptom of CVD that is physically very obvious is a heart attack. That is one heck of a first symptom!  When we hear the story about the “57 year old man who ‘never’ had a sick day in his life dies from a heart attack”, we wonder what happened!  In actuality, it takes YEARS to develop CVD before the first noticeable symptom appears.

What Should We Learn From CVD

When one’s health is being neglected, there are other subtle symptoms that occur prior to a heart attack that we normally don’t notice.   Learn to recognize these symptoms before the root cause begins to spiral out of control. Many symptoms are painful, but we think it is a normal part of our lives and try to just get by. A more practical approach would be to gain control of your health, improve on it daily, and not take it for granted.

Health Is Hard-Work

Taking care of your body begins with your spinal health. Regular check-up’s by your chiropractor will ensure that there is a proper connection between the brain and body.  Healthy spine = healthy body. How so? Your central nerve system created the spine to be an external protection . Keeping your spine aligned and happy keeps your central nerve system happy as well.  People assume that you should only see a chiropractor when you have back or neck pain. WRONG! That is equivalent to only eating healthy food when you are sick. Just like a heart attack being the last noticeable symptom of CVD, back or neck pain will sometimes be the last symptoms to appear when your spinal health has been neglected.

Basic Anatomy 101

When a nerve is irritated by a misaligned spine and has unnecessary stress, the nerve does not send proper signals to the cells, organs, and glands that it controls.  That is Basic Anatomy 101 in Chiropractic and Medical Studies. What does this mean? Imagine that the very nerve that made your heart, controls your heart and sends electrical impulses to make it beat is irritated.   In this case, the messages to the heart will be either HYPER or HYPO (aka High Blood Pressure or Low Blood Pressure). Look to the spine in order to get the messages clear. Be preventative and act now. #getchecked

Heating Up…Why Fevers Are Controlled Burns

Heating Up…Why Fevers Are Controlled Burns

Wildfires!  Forests in the Northwestern part of the Unites States are susceptible to wildfires.  When wildfires occur, they must be controlled and managed safely.  A short burn can be beneficial in some cases, but let it get out of control and the whole forest will be destroyed.  Like wildfires, when your body temperature rises and a fever occurs it also must be controlled.  A fever that is too high and too long will do more damage than good, but a fever that is short and within the ‘safe’ range can be beneficial to the body.  Neither are 100% preventable, but both are sometimes necessary.  Your body is ready to fight and protect itself and it is heating up for a reason.

Fighting Infections Naturally

A fever occurs for a specific reason.  Your body’s innate intelligence detects that there is an underlying problem and causes your body to enter protection mode by adapting to the stressors that are occurring within the body.  It is important to let your body’s innate intelligence do what it is meant to do.  Your immune systems natural reaction is to burn out the bad.  A simple fever of 104 degrees and below is natural and is protecting the body from harm.

Needs To Be A Quick Burn

When your body heats up and a battle ensues, it begins to activate and develop white blood cells (WBC’s).  WBC’s are your body’s soldiers.  Bacteria and viruses are slowed down by WBC’s, and when WBC’s are activated your body enters an ‘acute phase’.  When threatened, a healthy body will typically get a fever, adapt and overcome and eventually exit the ‘acute phase’.  In most cases this will only take a couple of days.  It is not a healthy response if your body does not exit the ‘acute phase’ and enters a ‘chronic phase’.  In a ‘chronic phase’, the fever is not controlled and your body is not adapting.

Fevers Do Not Cause Harm

Most of us have been misinformed about fevers our whole lives.  We’ve been told that fevers are bad thing, but they do not cause harm.  Remember, your body is performing a controlled burn and it is doing this so that your body may recover quickly and effectively.  The body has an amazing ability to heal itself.  If you attempt to suppress the fever, you discredit the bodies innate process of healing, and your body will not learn to retain the proper immunity response for the next time.

It’s Actually NOT Doctor Recommended

It’s Actually NOT Doctor Recommended

Most of us in some place and some time have heard of this tag line before “It is doctor recommended”.  Well, what is actually being recommended?  In this day and age, the newest recommendations have no ethical standards of what is being recommended, YET!  If you put the tagline “it is doctor recommended”, then automatically people think it is a good thing to do.  Speaking as a doctor and from a doctor’s perspective, here are some thoughts to consider…

We Did Not Go To Sales School

Buy this, use this, and double down on this?  Doctors did not go to school to sell you things.  There was no classroom that was solely and specially based on learning the art and craft of selling things to patients.  Be weary when things are “suggested” or “recommended” in the doctor’s office.  Why?  That is not the doctor’s responsibility.  As a doctor of chiropractic my job is to be a teacher and inform patients of what health is and what it is not; what your health needs and what it does not need and more importantly how and why it does what it does.  Health does not come in form of lotions, potions, or ‘snake-oils’ that are constantly being invented as the newest and latest health craze.

Always Be The Thinker

Think for yourself and, as my mother always taught me, always consider your source.  When considering your health and the doctor’s recommendation, consider this.  Chiropractic is a philosophy, science and art of things NATURAL.  Lines become often blurred when ethical boundaries are mixed with compensation and things that are not natural.  Take for instance cigarettes.  Google the wording ‘doctors and cigarettes’ and click on images and see what pops up; comical to say the least.  You could say in that day and age they did not know any better.  Which is a false statement.  The recommendations have not changed.  Instead of the wording ‘cigarettes’, we are substituting that for pills, diets, lotions, and potions that are “safe” because they are Doctor Recommended.  Be a thinker when it comes to your health and avoid sales tactics.

Are You Doubting Your Newest Trend…Stick To What Works

Are You Doubting Your Newest Health Trend?…Stick To What Works

The newest and latest trends will always be just that…trends!  They will only last an instance, yet they still seem to draw some people in.  Why?  Sometimes it’s easy to get sidetracked and some people are just susceptible to trying to find the easy way.  The Health Industry will always attempt to sell you the newest and latest trend.  They prey on people that are looking for the “easy way.”  It’s not like we are talking about the car industry.  In the car industry you can upgrade to a new car, downgrade to an old beat up junker, add accessories, fix it up yourself, or even better, just continue to lease and not even own it.  With your health, you own it and you only get one shot.  There is no trading, leasing, accessorizing, or upgrading.  Yet, the health industry wants you to believe it’s possible.

Create Your Health Trend Time Capsule

History is available to teach us and it’s our responsibility to learn from it.  Health trends are no different than clothing styles or the latest and greatest hair-do.  Save your Shake – It – Weight and other health claims in a time capsule and I guarantee in some way, shape or form they will reappear in the future.  The same can be said for your drugs.  Save them, they will be around in another form or a new name later on in the future.  Why?  Simple.  Pharmaceutical companies don’t create cures, they create customers.  The health industry creates the illusions of the newest and latest.

Stick To What Works

Chiropractic is not new.  Hippocrates said, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.”  This is the Chiropractic mantra due to the fact that it is the truth.  Basic, entry level physiological textbooks, whether chiropractic or medical, (they are completely the same) state that your Central Nerve System is the master system.  The CNS is housed and protected via the spinal column and skull.  A healthy spinal column entails a healthy body.  BASIC.  What else works?  Exercise and eating clean…basic fundamental lifelong principles that are hard to do.  Take the road less traveled much?

We Can Help You With That

We Can Help You With That

We can help you with that.  Help with what?  Your bodies overall functionality.  People say that  “Chiropractors think they can cure anything.”  There is truth and misguided information in this statement.  First, your Chiropractor should be teaching you why and how they can help the body.  Second, the word cure is thrown around way to loosely and should not be used in chiropractic care. Understand the major premise to understand your Chiropractors thought process.

The Major Premise

Scientifically we understand that the brain and spinal cord, collectively called the central nerve system (CNS) regulates, controls, and even made every system and part of you. When a nerve exiting out of the spinal column has stress placed on it, immediately the nerve deviates off of normal tone. The organs, cells, and tissues that the nerve supplies will as a result begin to become hyper or hypo, thus damaging the body.  This “major premise” is not just recognized by Chiropractors. It is no different than what medical doctors have been taught in basic physiology.  The difference however, begins in treating the damaged organ and addressing the cause which controls, and coordinates the organ to help the body adapt and function properly.

Chiropractic Enables Your Body To Adapt

Chiropractic does not treat, nor cure the body. When a Chiropractor adjusts a specific area that is placing undo stress on a specific nerve the body immediately begins to release adaptive forces. Meaning? You begin to heal yourself. This once again is not a new “made up concept.” People are demanding more natural and effective forms of healthcare. You’d be amazed with what wellness and regular chiropractic care can do to enhance your health and performance. If your lifestyle does not include specific spinal healthcare, your body cannot function efficiently. By eliminating stress on the CNS you will have a positive impact on your ability to adapt and function. #getchecked

Can I Get The One Time Adjustment…

By | Benefits of Chiropractic, Chiropractic Myths | No Comments

Can I Get The One Time Adjustment??

The big question that is often thought of or presumed with what actually happens in chiropractic offices is…”Can I get the one-time adjustment?”  Unfortunately some chiropractic offices create the illusion that you will only need ONE adjustment to solve all of your problems.  Which just so happens to be the farthest thing from the truth.  Let’s have some fun with this thought process as well as debunking why it just isn’t so.

Why Can’t I Get the “One and Done”?

The reason you cannot get the one and done is because it does not exist.  Why do I have pain and then get adjusted and feel better?  When a subluxation is adjusted the body automatically creates a chemical reaction releasing feel good hormones as well as a surge of ATP and dopamine.  ATP is your energy currency that every cell requires, thus allowing you to take on the day.  Dopamine rushes to your brain and releases a flood of feel good endorphins.  It does not mean that you are better though.  It means that you just started on the path to healing.

Doesn’t the Bone Move?

Yes and no.  Your chiropractor’s responsibility is to adjust the subluxation which is creating dysfunction within your central nerve system.  Adjusting the subluxation takes time and repetition to restore proper alignment within the spine. The bone does not just move from point A to point B in a matter of a milliseconds and skip all the healing properties that are required to establish proper neural memory.  THAT is drastic thinking and does not happen.  The bone moves over time to establish proper alignment.  Think of braces along the teeth. Same concept.

Awesome Analogies

Time and repetition are fundamental to maintaining your central nerve system’s functionality and peak performance.  Healthy central nerve system = healthy body.  You use it every day so maintain its integrity and limit the dysfunction that it comes in contact with.  Here are some analogies that relate to the “one and done” adjustment.

  1.  Hairstylist- Can I have the one time hair-cut so I don’t have to ever get it cut again…please?
  2. Mechanic- Can I just get my oil changed just once…please?
  3. Fitness Trainer- Can I just work-out once and have amazing six-pack abs…please?
  4. Parenting- I am just going to parent one day and teach my kids one time…hope it works!
  5. Nutrition- Can I just eat all the healthy foods just for one day and call it quits…pretty please??
  6. Religion- I read my Bible only on August 1st 2010 and learned everything I needed to!
  7. Book-keeping- Can you please just balance my books once so I don’t ever have to do it again?
  8. Doctor- So I want the labs to check for everything… please!
