A Chiropractor Point Of View

By | Benefits of Chiropractic

Thinking like a Chiropractor is not the norm of our society.  A Chiropractors point of view goes against what we think is “normal” in our society.  There are two HUGE different view points, which basically are two HUGE different paradigms.  You have Western Medicine which is the study of disease and what causes somebody to die.  Then on the complete opposite pole you have Chiropractic and what causes somebody to live and be abundant in life.  A Chiropractor realizes that everything you were born with is just ENUF!  You do not need outside sources/dope to help you.  A Chiropractor realizes that everything is connected and everything in your body needs to work in harmony.  If the nerve system is not functioning properly that means your body is not functioning properly.  What does a chiropractor check and specialize in……the nerve system!  Western Medicine looks at something and puts a disease label on it and begins to infiltrate your body with dope.  This dope is not smart though, it causes more harm than good.  Any drug advertisement brings about with it certain disclaimers at the end of the message……this should be bright light bulb!  Now, our disclaimer is that WM has made huge strides, in emergency care, trauma care, and crisis care……enuf said.

Example.  Someone who has high blood pressure walks into Western Medicine (WM).  WM will send them to a heart specialist who will access the heart and then possibly put you anti-hypertensives and then put a label on you such as high blood pressure.  This might work, and your body might accept it and it might lower your blood pressure.  Your body might reject and start to have adverse symptoms with other organs, cells, tissues, and glands.  Now, let us jump to a chiropractor and the other paradigm.  Someone who has high blood pressure walks into a Chiropractors office.  The chiropractor will access your nerves, take x-rays and look at all the structures controlled by your nerves….which is everything.  A chiropractor is not going to single out that heart, and say that the heart is the sole purpose and reason for the so called high blood pressure.  A chiropractor realizes that everything works together and when 1 thing begins to have dysfunction you have to look at the body as 1 ENTIRE PART.  When your body begins to overcome and adapt to certain stress in your life, your body HEALS.

Yet another analogy! It is like a Swiss watch.  If the minute hand stops working WM will focus specifically on that minute hand and focus entirely on that minute hand.  A Chiropractor will check out every big lever, every small lever, every big gear, and every little gear that makes that minute hand function correctly!  Get  your nerves checked.

Understanding Chiropractic

By | Benefits of Chiropractic

The thoughts that many of us have concerning chiropractic is NOT about sore backs.  “The function of the nerve system is to perceive the environment and coordinate the behavior of all other cells” ~Dr. Bruce Liption, PhD Biologist.  Chiropractic deals with the nerve system.  A chiropractor is a nerve system specialist, and that nerve system just so happens to be the most important component of your body regulating and controlling ALL.  The causes of why someone would think about chiropractic is: 1. Physical Stress 2. Chemical Stress 3. Emotional Stress.  The effects of why someone thinks of chiropractic is: Dyskinesia, Dysafferentation, Dysautonomia, Dysponesis, Dysconnected!  Let us go further into chiropractic and the effects it helps.

Chiropractic and “Dyskinesia”: deals with movement.  If you have improper movement in your spinal bones, then you will have decreased range of motion.  Chiropractic and “Dysafferentation”: deals with your senses.  If you have improper movement then you will have improper sensory function (coordination, you get the picture…your senses).  Chiropractic and “Dysautonomia”: deals with your autonomic nerve system.  If you have dysfunction with your autonomic nerve system, you have improper function or glands, organs, reproductive system, immune system, etc.

Chiropractic and “Dysponesis”: relating to human health as a whole and the disease process as factors of reactions to our environment.  Chiropractic and “Dysconnected”: the final one…..the answer is in the word.  Notice, during this entire rant of chiropractic, low back pain was not even mentioned once (except now)!  Chiropractic allows energy to flow and unlocks your potential you have been hiding!

Chiropractic and Infertility

Chiropractic and Infertility

Infertility is a difficult subject to approach at times.  Infertility is also a frightening realization and very very stressful.  Let us explain why chiropractic can help you with infertility.  Fertility issues are many cases a result of your body not functioning at 100%.  Who controls that body?  Your nerve system!  As stated earlier, infertility is a very very stressful situation.  Stress on your nerve system comes about in many ways.  Jumping, eating, running, partying, driving….etc….etc.  All of those activities directly attack your nerve system, but HEY, you are supposed to perform those; because that is LIFE.  If you body has a failure to adapt from something so catastrophic, then it becomes stress.  When a spinal bone moves and places pressure on your nerves…..that is a subluxation….that is STRESS on your body.  If this subluxation happens in your lower back which control your female reproductive organs, then that stress will be the major communication line and not optimal function.

Having your nerves checked and clear of interference will allow infertility to be an issue of the past.  Proper structure of your spinal bones allows your communication highway to run free, the way it was intended.  Chiropractic and infertility is not a cure or a treatment.  Chiropractic and infertility allows your body to function the way it was designed……self sustaining!  After 1 year of trying to conceive and not being able to, things become very stressful.  Proper spinal movement (adjustments) allows proper cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).  Improper positioning of the spinal bones affects the nerves which then restrict CSF flow and impacts the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.  Both glands producing hormones such as FSH and lutenizing hormone which serve for reproduction function. Stressful situation = stress on nerves = improper function of organs, cells, tissues, and glands.  Chiropractic is a safe, cost-effective, approach for couples dealing with infertility.  Your nerve system coordinates and controls all that you do.  Chiropractors are nerve system specialists.  Infertility or not, proper communication via your nerves allows a safe, effective, and vital approach to your health.

What Is A Pinched Nerve

What Is A Pinched Nerve

Yep, “I just started to feel like I had a pinched nerve or I slipped and fell and now I have a pinched nerve.”  Two very common statements that we hear on a consistent basis.  What in fast is a pinched nerve?  You have twenty four spinal bones, and out of each them exit two nerve on each side.  If one of your spinal bones moves out of position (up, down, back, left, north, south, east…etc..etc) that specific bone will “act” on the nerve.  Hence the pinched nerve term.  This is called a subluxation. A subluxation is what chiropractors find and if needed adjust.  People feel pinched nerves at different times and for different reasons.  The most common example would be being hit by a plane….you are going to have a pinched nerve….a subluxation.  You are going to feel the pinched nerve (subluxation) probably immediately.  Someone else is eliciting signs and symptoms of numbness and tingling sensations…that is a pinched nerve..a subluxation.  Someone is having a migraine headache….once again a pinched nerve…a subluxation.

What?  A migraine headache signifies a pinched nerve?  Yes!  If a bone is “acting”/ pinching on a nerve, then that nerve is not functioning at 100%.  If a nerve is not functioning at 100% your body starts to elicit signs and symptoms, thus resulting in a pinched nerve….a subluxation.  When a chiropractor finds and locates your pinched nerve and adjusts the subluxation, that nerve has no other option than to function at 100%.  Why does it take time to help HEAL a pinched nerve…a subluxation?  Arnold “Schwarzennnnager” did not just happen to go to the gym 1 time and look the way he did.  Healing takes time and gaining muscle memory, ligament memory, TISSUE MEMORY takes time.  Going through the process enables your body to become stronger and not rely on dope “crutches.”  A pinched nerve is not a very nice thing for your body.  A pinched nerve is different for everybody and can only manifest in one way….negative outcomes.  A chiropractor can help you live healthier and to your potential you want!

The Gonstead Chiropractor

By | Benefits of Chiropractic

Gonstead Chiropractor

Why a Gonstead chiropractor?  Dr. C.S. Gonstead (Dr. “G”) was a chiropractor who developed a technique that later developed into his name, hence the Gonstead chiropractic.  Why don’t all chiropractors utilize the Gonstead technique?  Our school of thought here at Carlson Chiropractic Offices is to utilize the most proficient technique in adjusting.  Dr. Calrson and Dr. Basler both attended Palmer College of Chiropractic (Chiropractic Started) that has a strong in-house curriculum for Gonstead chiropractic.  Both chiropractors attended numerous Gonstead seminars and still attend Gonstead seminars to keep up to date with education and how they can consistently improve.  Le it also be known that Dr. Carlson actually did learn in person from Dr. Gonstead.

Dr. Gonstead developed his technique over the course of his career.  Always improving and finding ways to be even more specific and understanding of how the body worked.  Dr. “G” before he was a chiropractor was an engineer.  So, utilizing his background as an engineer you could say his technique was focused around all the components of the body working as one.  Utilizing full spine x-ray  as well as full spine adjusting.  The Nervo-Scope for every single practice member at every visit is used it allow further assessment.  The thoroughness that goes into Gonstead Chiropractic is sufficient to eliminate all guessing from your body.

Gonstead chiropractic utilizes the bio-mechanically fundamentals of how your body responds to subluxations and how a chiropractor can thoroughly adjust those subluxations.  A Gonstead chiropractor takes considerate time and dedication to understand the entire system (We are still learning and getting better on a day to day basis!).  Gonstead chiropractic is a principled, specific, chiropractic technique that allows chiropractors to work on minute old babies to 95 year old osteoporosis practice members.  The chiropractor takes into account each individual practice member and accesses their spine, knowing that their is no cookie-cutter formula for what chiropractors do.  Here at Carlson Chiropractic Offices we take pride in what we do.  WE take pride in improving our art on a daily basis.

A Back Pain Misconception

A Back Pain Misconception

Why do people suffer from back pain?  Why do I see a chiropractor when I have  back pain?  Excellent questions!  People see chiropractor’s for a multitude of reasons, and at the top of list unfortunately is back pain.  However, we say unfortunately very lightly because once we are able to help you and tell you the real reason why you see a chiropractor, then we grow as a stronger/healthier community.  Remember back pain will be the last sign and symptom to show up (unless you get hit by a plane, run over by a steam-roller, or something catastrophic).

Why do people suffer from back pain?  Well, we go through something that we like to call “Life.”  During life you go through many stressor’s and your body is able to adapt to the demand.  When your body encounters something that it is unable to adapt properly to, your body starts to defend itself.  Your body starting to defend itself is the signs and symptoms that you begin to develop (fatigue, depression, menstrual issues, immunity issues, etc, etc).  These sings and symptoms are your actual beginning of back pain, however they do not manifest in that capacity. Instead you think that an organ is not working right, a gland is not working right, etc.  What do we do?  Take some dope (meds) and hope that our symptoms will go away.  Then after some time and your symptoms appear, then disappear, and you go through this roller-coaster ride.  Then and just then your back pain appears.

Why do I see a chiropractor when I have back pain?  People think back pain, they think chiropractor.  People think chiropractor, they think back pain.  Can chiropractic help with back pain?  You betcha!  Can chiropractic help you when your first signs and symptoms were appearing (fatigue, depression, menstrual issues, immunity issues, etc, etc)?  You betcha!  In fact when those first signs and symptoms appear, chiropractor’s address your cause of your “back pain” and do not chase symptoms.  Remember back pain will be the last sign and symptom to show up.  We can get you out of back pain as fast as your body allows, and then go for the healing process!  The healing power is so much more than dope!

The Birth of a Chiropractor

By | Benefits of Chiropractic

September 18th, 1895 was the birth of the first Chiropractor.  Dr. D.D. Palmer was the very first Chiropractor in Davenport, IA.  Let it be known that the very first Chiropractor did not adjust low back pain.  Harvey Lillard was a custodian who worked in the Ryan Building in Davenport, IA. Dr. Palmer noticed that Harvey had lost his hearing and that, in fact Harvey lost his hearing performing a motion that many of us perform on a consistent every day basis.  Harvey was in a bent over, “stooped” position and heard something “pop” in his back.  Immediately following the motion and the “popping” sound, Harvey realized that his sense of hearing was lost/diminished.

Dr. Palmer took to Harvey and exaamined his spinal vertabrea and noticed that there was a vertabrea out of position.  The spinal vertabrea is now what Chiropractor’s call a vertebral subluxation.  A vertebral subluxation is when a bone moves out of position with the one below.  The vertebral subluxation acts upon (puts pressure) nerves thus creating signs and symptoms of dis-ease: loss of hearing, hypertension, vertigo, infertility, gerd, etc, etc.  Dr. Palmer proceeded to apply pressure to the spinal vertabrea and adjust the spinal bone with the right amount of force.  After the first adjustment, Harvey’s hearing came back to him.  Thus, creating the first chiropractor : Dr. D.D. Palmer.

Dr. Palmer’s rationale in applying a force to the spinal vertabrea was that the bone was inhibiting communication for the nerves to function properly.  Hmmm, sounds like he was onto something. A chiropractor school was started and the beginning of a science, art, and philosophy that focused on keeping people healthy, and getting the sick well was born.  Palmer College of Chiropractic is the fountainhead of chiropractic.  Both chiropractor’s (Dr. Carlson and Dr. Basler) attended school at Palmer College of  Chiropractic.  We are happy to share with you this amazing day and look forward to telling you more!  Remember, the very first Chiropractor did not adjust a patient for lower back pain, but for so much more.

Blood Pressure Cut By Chiropractic

By | Benefits of Chiropractic

Blood Pressure Cut By Chiropractic

Blood pressure can be lowered by chiropractic adjustments?  First, we have to establish what is technically normal for one person is not normal for another person.  The average blood pressure is considered 120/80 mm hg.  However, that is not the case for most people.  Why?  People adapt differently and putting them in a classified box of what is “normal” and what is “not normal” should not be the case.  If you “have” high blood pressure you are considered of having a disease called hypertension.  Are you saying that chiropractic can “treat” hypertension?  If chiropractic looks at hypertension and neglects the entire body and how everything else is functioning, then you miss the concept.

After utilizing x-rays, properly accessing your neurological function, and locating and finding the cause of your current condition, a chiropractor takes a whole body approach.  Here is the paradigm :

1) Medicine will see that you have high blood pressure, because you are “not normal” and prescribe medication to lower your blood pressure, because something has to be wrong if you have a higher pressure.  Focusing specifically and solely on your heart musculature masking and covering up your cause and treating symptoms.

2) Chiropractic will look and focus on your entire system/s which function and integrate together collectively.  Locating the cause of your inability to adapt functionally to your current situation and locating the cause of the problem.  Locating the cause and allowing your body to adapt.

Your bodies intelligence is there for a reason. If you have blood pressure outside the “normal,” why do you think so?  Because your body needs to be elevated, because your body is attempting (and succeeding) in keeping you above your current health conditions, because your body is not sending complete signals via your nerves due to a subluxation.

There are studies that show chiropractic adjustments to lower an individuals blood pressure. Why?  If your body is sending clear neurological messages then your body is NORMAL! Your body is normal to who and what you are!  Patients tell us after beginning chiropractic care and receiving specific chiropractic adjustments that their medical doctor has taken them off blood pressure medication.  WHAT?!!  It is important to remember that a healthy nerve system contributes to a healthy well-being.  Remember the first chiropractic adjustment was not for low back pain!

Chiropractic care for Torticollis in Infants

Chiropractic care for Torticollis in Infants

Torticollis or sometimes called wry neck is a condition in which an infants (or adult) head is tilted due to a “twisting” in their neck musculature.  The musculature of the neck is either shortened or contracted for a prolonged period of time which then results in the head compensating.  Who is responsible for the shortening or contraction of the muscles……nerves…..who checks nerves….chiropractor’s!  A subluxation (what chiropractors find and adjust) in the upper cervical area is most likely responsible for the torticollis like symptoms.  Either acquired or congenital torticollis results in the same outcome.  Head being rotated with a shortened or contracted neck musculature.  A visible mass will sometimes be noticeable if not felt on palpation of the neck.  Other signs and symptoms from older children can be found such as headaches, neck pain, shoulder discomfort and crying.

Chiropractors have been helping infants and adults with torticollis for years.  That is why we strongly recommend having your child checked after birth to make sure they are developing and no serious trauma was sustained during the birth.  Congenital torticollis is acquired in the womb.  Improper positioning of the baby can result in torticollis.  Chiropractic care after birth is something that we are very passionate about in making sure that your new child is able to progress and develop the way they should be…HEALTHY.

Spinal health of our children affects their overall health and development. According to recent medical research, misalignment of spinal bones in the neck, known as subluxation, is responsible for up to 50% of congenital torticollis. The subluxation irritates nearby nerve structures and causes the muscle spasm and postural changes characteristic of torticollis.  Having your child checked for subluxations makes sense!

Primary Pediatric Care, by R.A. Hoekelman.1

“Sudden difficulty in rotating the head to one side, accompanied by torticollis and muscle spasm, may occur as a result of rotational subluxation of the atlas (C1) on the axis (C2) or C2 on C3.”

Chiropractor vs Allergies

Chiropractor vs Allergies

A chiropractor can help me deal with my allergies?  What does a chiropractor have to do with allergies?  Excellent questions!  Thousands of people in our community of Kalispell suffer from allergies and even thousand more in the Flathead Valley.    Even though a chiropractor does not offer treatments for allergies, why is it even a topic?  An allergy is anything that your body does not recognize and something your body starts to defend against.  The defenders in your body we are referring is your immune system.  Guess who controls your immune system…..that’s right….your nerves!  Your nerve system controls your immune system.  Who checks your nerves system?  A chiropractor!

Bacteria, pollen, grass, drugs, etc can be harmful to your body and cause your body to be allergic to them!  When we have an allergic reaction to something our immune system steps on overdrive to protect you.  Your immune system produces too many defenders and your body suffers as a result of it.  Even though your body is attempting to protect you it has a tendency to over-do-it sometimes.  Your immune system is directly controlled and influenced by your nerve system.  Yes, what a chiropractor checks on a daily basis with every patient.  If your immune system is over working, this means your nerves are over working to protect you.  Imagine working over-time and not getting paid for it, not a fun concept.

The functioning of the nerve system is proportional to the functioning of the immune system.  A chiropractor removes interference from your body. A chiropractor finds and adjusts subluxations ( when vertebrata in your spinal column act/put pressure on your nerves) to allow your body to be functioning and ADAPTING to your so called allergens.  A chiropractor helps your body’s immune system to function properly!  If your immune system is functioning at 100%, then your body can neutralize toxic substances without having an allergic reaction.  Keeping your nerve system functioning properly and free of subluxations is what a chiropractor does.  Allows you to have the freedom you want, and thinking less of the repercussions of your lifestyle.
